After her breakup with Jay, Whitney reflects on her decision to move to NYC in the first place. Did she make a mistake? Should she have just stayed in LA? Overall, this episode was pretty depressing with Whitney getting passed up for a job in London and Allie getting back together with Adam. On the other hand, we got to see Lauren in this episode and found out that Olivia will be going to London (i.e. Whitney won’t have to deal with Olivia’s bitchiness anymore). And the best part is that when Jay came back begging for Whitney, she turned the tables around and dumped him!
Getting a chance to see Lauren in this episode was actually a pleasant surprise. Whitney calls her up to tell her how lost and alone she’s feeling after her break up with Jay. She explains that the city “swallows you up and spits you back out” and on top of that, Olivia continues to walk all over her at work. And by far, the best quote of the whole episode is Whitney’s description of Olivia: “You can just see the daggers in her eyes.” Lauren, of course, reassures Whitney that she didn’t make any mistakes and that she just needs to stay focused on why she moved to New York in the first place: her job.

While Whitney and Olivia are working on Fashion Week, Whitney finally stands up to Olivia by telling her that she needs to give her more credit for choosing the outfit for the cover of Elle. Surprisingly, Olivia doesn’t cause any drama nor does she bitch Whitney out. Instead, she agrees and tells Whitney she would be happy to give her more recognition, but then walks away immediately. Then, while Whitney is sulking in the corner, Diane von Furstenberg approaches her and after asking Whitney about her love life, she gives her advice that the most important relationship is the one with herself. Awww, how sweet is that. Too bad Whitney’s relationship with herself has been nonexistent this entire season.

In the meantime, we discover that Adam wants Allie to move back in with him. When Allie comes to visit Adam at work, he proclaims that Allie is his one true love and spits out some more bullshit like that. Of course Allie eats this all up and tells Adam she loves him even more. Eww, I think I just vomited in my mouth!

Back at the DVF party, Jay calls Whitney and she discovers that he actually came back and is waiting right outside for her. Right as she goes to meet him, Olivia breaks the news to Whitney about her new promotion, but Whitney does the right thing and leaves without congratulating Olivia or making a scene (although a part of me really did want Whitney to slap Olivia right then and there).

In the last part of the episode we find out that Jay kind of felt bad about the way things ended. At least Adam was able to describe how much he loved Allie, but all Jay can say to Whitney is “I really do love you…I know it’s a bit late, but it’s better late than never.” The big shocker comes when Whitney doesn’t automatically forgive him like the way Allie takes Adam back every single time. Instead, she firmly replies, “It’s also too little, too late.” She completely flips the situation around by saying that now she needs to be alone to focus on her job. And just before she starts to cry, if you look real closely, I’m pretty sure you can see a smirk on her face as she turns around and walks away from Jay. Who knew Whitney actually had the guts to stand up for herself?!?! Or maybe she was just following her boss’ orders. Either way, it’s about time for Whit to focus on herself for a change.

Wow. Just when you think Whitney will finally get it together, stand up for herself, break up with Jay, and begin her single life in New York… she lets Jay break up with her. Unbelievable.

We find out at the beginning of the episode that Jay’s career mediocre band is leading him out of New York in five days for at least two months. He has known about this since before the Miami trip and is finally telling… Adam. Jay gets advice in the form of, “Girls are throwing panties onstage for you, man. How are you going to survive a tour?” In other words, talk to your girlfriend. The one you’re living with. The one who thinks you’re cheating on her. Okay, I see how that’s tough.

Whitney and Olivia are continuing their spat at work. We’re supposed to believe that their jobs are very serious and very difficult. We’re also supposed to believe that Whitney is great at her job but Olivia keeps stealing the glory (because she is a huge bitch). The episode has Whitney working hard and Olivia taking pictures with her digital camera, then Whitney coming through very prepared during the presentation and Olivia stuttering. Can’t be a serious actress if you can’t talk in front of 25 people, Olivia. Just kidding. We know this is an MTV orchestrated task. Or at least I hope it is, because I really hope that Olivia can string together enough words for a 10 minute presentation.

Back to Mr. Tamarama. This is the first time in a long time where Jay is well dressed and clean shaven. He looks like he is going to break up with Whitney. He even took her to a public restaurant so she couldn’t freak out. He is drinking to get up the courage! He breaks the news that he is leaving in five days and… she ends up running out of the restaurant and crying. Before that, she tells Jay to find his own place to sleep.

Whitney to Erin sometime later: “I’m, like, drowning in this. I feel like everything is crashing down on me right now and I need to take some control.” Dramatic.

Take control? Whitney lets Jay come to her apartment because she think he is coming to make amends. But seriously, Jay had known about this tour for weeks. He’s been planning this breakup for a while. He tells her he cares, but says that she is the one who keeps causing trouble between the two of them while he’s just trying to mind his own business (sleep around). How is he going to deal with her when he’s across the country? (How will he have time to sleep around?) She asks him if she’s worth it. He says no. Tears.

Seriously though, Jay is a terrible boyfriend. He cheats. He mooches. He looks like shit all the time. He always blames Whitney. He is in a terrible band that has no future. Whitney can do better.

Oh no! This week’s episode of The City ended with Whitney shedding a few tears. Not only was the naïve Whitney fooled again by Jay and his lies about his ex-girlfriend, Danielle, but she was also fooled by our favorite 23-year old socialite, Olivia, on an assignment at work. Shame on you Whitney, you should know you can’t trust anyone on this show!

At DVF, Whitney and Olivia were given the task of choosing Jessica Alba’s outfit for the March issue of Elle. Olivia was put in charge, but she was doing a terrible job choosing puke-green, slutty outfits. On the other hand, Whitney found a colorful top with a matching skirt that Olivia thought was too “matchy, matchy” and would never work. However, Whitney kept insisting on including it in the pile, and Olivia finally agreed only because it gave the selection a little color.

When the March issue of Elle was published, whose outfit do you think was on the cover? Surprise, surprise, Whitney’s outfit is chosen! But the real shocker comes when Olivia takes full credit for everything at the luncheon celebration. Whitney doesn’t say a word, and stands helpless while Olivia receives all the praise. We knew Olivia was a bitch from the start, so why is this so shocking for Whitney?

Meanwhile, Whitney and Jay have been living together, while he’s been trying to find a new apartment. According to Whitney, they’ve lost the passion and excitement in their relationship. And on top of that, he lives a “rock star life” and comes back every night at 5:30 a.m. so they barely get to see each other. Danielle, Jay’s ex-girlfriend, pops up again in this episode while Adam and Jay are at the Pink Elephant Club. She’s only visiting for two days, so it seems like a huge coincidence that she runs into Jay again. It takes the two of them approximately 30 seconds before they decide to leave together…

When Jay and Whitney have dinner the next day, he tells her he barely got any sleep last night and he’s exhausted. Whitney doesn’t even bother to ask who he was with, but she finds out from Allie the next day and starts to cry. Is this the end of Whitney and Jay? Will she finally stand up for herself and dump Jay’s ass? Fool Whitney thrice, then she deserves it!

This week on The City, the entire cast decides to go on vacation and spend a week in Miami, except for Allie who is stuck back in New York doing a photo shoot. I hope Adam takes advantage. This episode, which revolved solely around Whitney/Jay and Adam/Allie drama, can be summarized in exactly three quotes. Let’s take a look.

1. “There’s a lot of temptations lurking around the corner.”
- Jay to Adam, by the pool in Miami

The first temptation lurking around the corner that we see are several half-naked women in bikinis. And thanks MTV for the two seconds of nudity on screen…scandalous!

Jay’s temptation lurking around the corner happens to be his ex-girlfriend, Danielle, the same girl from the pilot episode who Jay was rumored to have cheated on Whitney with. Danielle lives in Miami and she just happens to be at the same party as Whitney and Jay while they’re visiting Miami. When Jay approaches “Dani” we find out that she is completely single and then out of nowhere they both start apologizing to each other for going home together the night she visited him in New York. This just confirms the fact that we knew Jay couldn’t be trusted from the start!

Meanwhile, Adam wins the “booby award,” which according to Erin, who is spying on Adam for Allie, consists of 15 girls rubbing their breasts against him at the club in Miami. Like Erin is one to judge…is she single or is she dating two guys at once?

Back in New York, Allie is facing a temptation of her own. Allie’s photo shoot turns out to be super awkward because it consists of her taking pictures with a guy who is biting her shoulder. Is that supposed to be sexy? Once it’s over, the hot male model she was posing with asks her to grab a few drinks. And after hearing what Erin says about Adam, Allie agrees to the “date.” Yes! I‘m so excited that Allie finally gets to participate in all the cheating and deception that goes on in this show!

2. “I’m starting to get really sick…this conversation is making me nauseous.”
- Whitney to Jay back at Whitney’s apartment

Don’t worry Whitney. Jay makes me nauseous too. Enough said.

3. “There’s ALWAYS something with Jay.”
-Jay’s ugly ex-roommate to Whitney while they are shopping

In the last scene of the episode, we see Whitney in a clothing store talking to this random girl. Who is she and why does she have a gigantic gap between her two front teeth? She turns out to be Jay’s old roommate who reveals that when she was living with him, she found out that he’s definitely got a temper and he always happens to tell little lies: “you never know the truth with him.”

And where is Olivia this whole time?!?! The episode is very disappointing without her.

For some reason, there isn’t a single person on this show who can say no: Olivia can’t say “No, get the f— out” to Nevan, Adam can’t say “No, find your own apartment to Allie,” Erin can’t say “No, I don’t still love my ex-boyfriend you can trust me” to Duncan, and Whitney can’t say “No, you’re such a scrub I don’t want you to live with me” to Jay.

Let’s begin with Olivia. Her scrub of a cousin, Nevan, is still living with her. He tells her he doesn’t want to move anywhere else because it would be such a downgrade from her awesome apartment. His life shouldn’t be worse than hers. Of course, he says this while he’s still hung over, presumably from drinking cans of Bud Light in her apartment (there’s one still on the counter). Please, please let Nevan continue living his fabulous lifestyle.

Next we shift to Adam and Allie, fighting over a game of Scrabble. Allie seems like the passive aggressive type who spells words to indicate how she’s feeling, except she isn’t clever enough to spell many words, so she probably spelled something like “MEANIE” against Adam. Unfortunately, “MEANIE” doesn’t net you many points in Scrabble and Adam won. Allie is incredibly good at manipulating Adam though, and manages to get him to kick Jay out just to avoid another fight. That’s what happens when you cheat on your girlfriend and still stay together, Adam. Allie is just so sad. Earlier in the episode, Whitney and Erin were talking about how she is “stranded” and has “nowhere else to be.” Seriously? She has no friends? Family? Is it because she manipulates everybody? Luckily Adam is easily manipulated and tells her, “I love waking up next to you everyday. There’s nothing more I could ask for. I couldn’t imagine living without you. I love you.” Cue Womanizer. Thanks MTV. We get it.

Erin is just ridiculous this episode. She apparently lives by the philosophy of “hav[ing] your cake and eat[ing] it too.” After JR awkwardly breaks up a face sucking contest between Duncan and Erin at a party, Duncan gets pissed and takes her off to the side. She thinks it’s a good idea to tell Duncan that “part of [her] heart will always love JR.” Duncan is tough though. It must be the beard. He tells Erin later that he wanted to punch JR and that he needs to know if he can trust her. No response. He then walks off by himself in the snow. Erin sheds one tear. Touching. Of course, Erin later gets drunk and cries at a New Year’s party when he doesn’t call her. Not nearly as touching. Throughout all of this, Erin manages to wear a wreath on her head in one scene and a few feathers sticking out in the next. Did she get jealous of Whitney in her Little Bo Peep headbands that she wanted to join in on the fun?

Finally, we have Whitney. We first find Whitney and Olivia trading insults at the DVF holiday party as Whitney gladly tells all her friends just how bad she is at her job. How are you supposed to know the names of all these fashion designers? Oh, wait, it’s your job. So maybe it shouldn’t surprise us when she can’t say no to Jay’s request to move in with her after he gets evicted. After all, who could say no to a guy in a top hat and a glimmery, fish scale vest. Guess she got a little too drunk a little too early on New Year’s Eve. She realizes his mistake immediately after a scrubby Jay wakes up and puts on a purple flannel shirt (okay, I kind of like the shirt). Jay then asks her if she will start cooking for him. Whitney looks really pissed after realizing what she’s done. Oh well.

Ridiculous episode all around. How are Nevan and Allie still around? How does Whitney have a job? Why do Jay and Adam have a friend called Smooth with a stripper pole in his apartment? In all honesty, I’m already over The City. Can we get the reality TV version of Chuck now?
