Dr. Ada Fisher, a black GOP committeewoman and a lifelong member of the National Association for the Advancement of African Americans, spoke Tuesday in honor of MLK Day.

Fisher is currently running for election In North Carolina House District 77. Invited by the Duke College Republicans, Fisher explained her views on several current political issues in addition to describing how the Republican party serves the black community.

As a doctor who studied public policy at Johns Hopkins University, Fisher focused a large part of her speech on the recently passed health care bill, relating some of the weaknesses of the health care bill including the $500 billion that will be taken from Medicare and Medicaid to fund it.

In addition, she also cited the lack of attention given to malpractice coverage as a major drawback of the bill.

“I resent that there is an amazing rush to pass things without people having had enough time to read them. This bill does not guarantee access to health care,” she said.

Fisher also spoke on the larger public policy issues that the nation is currently facing, citing jobs and employment as the number one problem of the country. She said one of the major issues that were not being sufficiently addressed by the current administration was the need for more jobs.

“We’ve already had a space race,” she said, “Now, we need a jobs race.”
