More details concerning the release party for Midtown Dickens’ new album Lantern. Opening the show will be Mount Moriah and Des Ark’s Aimee Argote, doing a solo gig. The album, called a “multimedia package,” contains a CD, vinyl, a download code for a digital copy as well as a 16-page collage/lyric booklet. And there’s the possibility of a free liquid surprise with every copy of the album sold–it sounds like you should get there early.

Doors for the Coffeehouse show are at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9.

A Peek at Duke's Fall Music Offerings

02 Aug 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Music, Playground, 1 Comments

We’ve already seen Duke Performance’s 2009-10 musical offerings but we’re already getting a sneek preview of some of the Duke University Union and Coffehouse offerings. First, somewhat old news, rising D.C. sensation Wale will grace Duke’s East Campus Quad Aug. 28 after the student activities fair targeted at first-years. Later that night, things get a little more folk and a little more local when Midtown Dickens stops by the Coffeehouse for their CD release party.

Additionally, Islands will grace the Coffeehouse with their presence Nov. 1 in promotion of their third album Vapours, which drops Sept. 22. Who’s secretly hoping Nick Thorburn shows up on Franklin St. the night before?

Check back here for a full Coffeehouse schedule soon.

Yesterday's News: TRKFest and I Was Totally Destroying It

21 Apr 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Playground, 0 Comments

Two bits of news we are a day late in posting. Bad news first, then good.

  • After the announcement of a contract on the band’s MySpace less than a month ago, Neckbeard Record’s has terminated their contract with I Was Totally Destroying It “Citing irreconcilable differences” according to a press release from the label. IWTDI was scheduled to release The Beached Margin/Done Waiting double EP in May alongside former labelmate Lemming Malloy, who are still signed and will release their album in May. Lemming Malloy is having a record release party May 22 at Local 506. IWTDI was schedule to play but we’re betting they are off the bill now. No news as to what said “irreconcilable differences” are, but it’s an interesting storyline for sure. IWTDI’s Done Waiting EP can be download at Reverb Nation for free, here.
  • After a successful first go last May, Trekky Records has scheduled its second (now) annual TRKFest for Saturday, June 13, again at the Piedmont Biofuels plant in Pittsboro, NC. In addition to the regular slate of Trekky bands, the day-long festival will include favorites Hammer No More the Fingers, Ivan Rosebud (that’s the Rosebud’s Ivan Howard), Midtown Dickens and Megafaun. Read more about the even (including the other events like the Pants-off Dance-off) over at Trekky’s blog.
