After the Yo La Tengo show last night, Midtown Dickens played an intimate house show in Durham with Box Elders that was, per the usual, delightful. Check out the videos below for a glimpse of what you missed (or didn’t if you were lucky enough to be there).
In what might be one of the cutest moments ever captured on film, Midtown Dickens covered the Sonny & Cher anthem “I Got You Babe,” with Kym Register and Catherine Edgerton serenading one another and a delighted audience. Watch the video below, and click here for more video of their packed, sweaty Friday night performance at the Duke Coffeehouse. The only appropriate reaction to this video is “Aww.” Enjoy.
Midtown Dickens celebrated the release of their second LP, Lanterns, Friday at the Duke Coffeehouse. The band–augmented by a quartet of horns and Megafaun’s Brad and Phil Cook–spent the time between songs thanking all their friends and those who enabled the album–it was like a bearable Oscars acceptance speech with great metaphors about babies. But a grateful Midtown Dickens was matched by an audience even more grateful for the energetic, joyful performance. Check out the three videos below of Midtown Dickens performing some of the tracks from Lanterns. (And if you are wondering about the head that occasionally pops on screen–that’s Kym Registers mom standing front row-center.)
Midtown Dickens is releasing its second album, Lanterns, Sept. 16 but are celebrating the release tomorrow night at the Duke Coffeehouse. You can read more about Lanterns and Midtown Dickens in today’s recess.
More details concerning the release party for Midtown Dickens’ new album Lantern. Opening the show will be Mount Moriah and Des Ark’s Aimee Argote, doing a solo gig. The album, called a “multimedia package,” contains a CD, vinyl, a download code for a digital copy as well as a 16-page collage/lyric booklet. And there’s the possibility of a free liquid surprise with every copy of the album sold–it sounds like you should get there early.
Doors for the Coffeehouse show are at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9.
