Megafaun, Physics of Meaning Captured by Vincent Moon

05 Aug 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Music, Playground, video, 0 Comments

Hometapes artists Megafaun and Slaraffenland, along with Trekky Record’s the Physics of Meaning and a slew of other bands (Stars Like Fleas, Balmorhea and Murder) all made their way into a recent Vincent Moon-filmed Takeaway Show. Shot at SXSW 2009, the 25-minute video is a gorgeous flow of music to both listen to and watch. The video starts with Megafaun playing”Worried Mind” from their excellent new release Gather, Form & Fly, and, according to the Trekky Records blog, Physics of Meaning are playing a new song, likely featured on their next album (after the 15-minute mark).

Yesterday's News: TRKFest and I Was Totally Destroying It

21 Apr 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Playground, 0 Comments

Two bits of news we are a day late in posting. Bad news first, then good.

  • After the announcement of a contract on the band’s MySpace less than a month ago, Neckbeard Record’s has terminated their contract with I Was Totally Destroying It “Citing irreconcilable differences” according to a press release from the label. IWTDI was scheduled to release The Beached Margin/Done Waiting double EP in May alongside former labelmate Lemming Malloy, who are still signed and will release their album in May. Lemming Malloy is having a record release party May 22 at Local 506. IWTDI was schedule to play but we’re betting they are off the bill now. No news as to what said “irreconcilable differences” are, but it’s an interesting storyline for sure. IWTDI’s Done Waiting EP can be download at Reverb Nation for free, here.
  • After a successful first go last May, Trekky Records has scheduled its second (now) annual TRKFest for Saturday, June 13, again at the Piedmont Biofuels plant in Pittsboro, NC. In addition to the regular slate of Trekky bands, the day-long festival will include favorites Hammer No More the Fingers, Ivan Rosebud (that’s the Rosebud’s Ivan Howard), Midtown Dickens and Megafaun. Read more about the even (including the other events like the Pants-off Dance-off) over at Trekky’s blog.

SxSW: How Does the Triangle Fare?

04 Mar 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Music, Playground, 1 Comments

In spite of being the most uncool branch of the Triangle’s most uncool city, Raleigh will be the area and the state’s best-represented city at South by Southwest this year. The Bull City will be sending two of its finer acts to Austin this year, though Des Ark association with Durham is pretty loose given her recent move to Charlotte and stronger ties to Pittsboro. Nonetheless, props to the Triangle for sending 13 of North Carolina’s 18 bands to Texas for the festival. If only one of them was playing for Rachel Ray…

Here’s a list of all the bands from the Tar Heel state playing in Austin March 18-22.

Chapel Hill
Black Skies
Dexter Romweber Duo
The Moaners
The Physics of Meaning
Valient Thorr

Durham
Des Ark
Megafaun

Raleigh
Alesana
Annuals
Colossus
The Love Language
The Rosebuds
Lonnie Walker

Other North Carolina Towns
The Avett Brothers (Concord)
Brother Reade (Winston-Salem)
Ear Pwr (Asheville)
Floating Action (Black Mountain)
He Is Legend (Wilmington)

CyTunes & Flute Flies

04 Jan 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Playground, 0 Comments

I should have read about this and posted it a while ago, but no time is better than the present, right?

Ivan Howard of the Rosebuds, Schooner’s Reid Johnson and Zeno Gill of Durham’s Pox World Empire have created a Triangle supergroup by the name of Flute Flies. The band was created this past summer to support the late Cy Rawls, a fixture of the local music scene who died this past October due to a brain tumor.

Chris Rossi of Durham’s Spacelab Recording Studio hatched the idea for a new music service to honor Rawls. CyTunes is a new music service that offers exclusive content–live and studio–of many local bands.

Not only is it the only place to find music from bands like Superchunk, I Was Totally Destroying It and Flute Flies, but it supports a good cause. All the proceeds (that’s everything but the cost of running the site–no artists are getting paid here) go to Duke’s Tisch Brain Tumor Center. I haven’t used the site yet, but it went live a few weeks ago and looks like it has some really great stuff.

In other news, the Rosebuds are playing a show at the Cat’s Cradle on Saturday, Jan. 24 with Megafaun and the Love Language.
