After three decades of releasing music, five of recording and about 40 shows, Texas-based Jandek will be gracing Triangle audiences with his music. Joining him on keyboard will be the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle, drummer Brian Jones and Cantwell, Gomez and Jordan’s Anne Gomez on bass.
I can’t say much about his performance, but because this is such a rare opportunity, it would certainly be a shame to miss out on it. For a video of Jandek performing, click here.
If you’re not watching the Oscars (because you probably won’t be, especially with our LIVE BLOG to fill you in), you should be at UNC’s Gerrard Hall at 7:30 p.m. for Jandek. For tickets ($20 advance, $22 day-of), click here.
For more info on Jandek, check out Grayson Currin’s promo interview with John Darnielle at the Indy Weekly online. Bull City Records’ Chaz Martinstein also has an excellent post about it over at his blog, WNn’G.
A few weeks into the semester, the Duke Coffeehouse has released its schedule and it is excellent. Phosphorescent, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and Durham’s own John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats will be making stops. Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu has also rescheduled his cancelled show from last semester. K Records is also sending Mahjongg Sound out and the hotly anticipated (at least for me) new Hammer No More the Fingers album will drop at the Coffeehouse.
Feb. 12 – K records recording artist Mahjongg Sound
Feb. 28 – Jamie Stewart (of Xiu Xiu)
March 19 – the Mountain Goats (solo), John Vanderslice (solo)
March 21 – Battle of the Bands
March 26 – Phosphorescent, Deertick
March 28 – Katastrophe, Athens Boy Choir, Midtown Dickens
April 4 – Hammer No More the Finger’s Viking Storm CD Release Party
April 10 & 11 – Inside Joke (Duke Sketch Comedy Group)
April 18 – Thao and the Get Down Stay Down
Here is the second part of our celebration of the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill music scene. Again, the list is not ranked. For part one, check here.
The Eye-Opener at BCHQ – August 2, 2008
A few of BCHQ’s board members work on a project to promote transgender awareness across the globe, specifically focusing on the Hijra communities in India. To help the cause locally, they put together a day-long festival in a sticky August day that included a bevvy of local artists (Mount Moriah, Des Ark, Megafaun, Embarrassing Fruits, etc.) and a vegan brunch. But the best moment of the day came at the end when the Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle gave the best endorsement ever of his current hometown. His numbers might be a little bit off, but someone in Durham needs to hire him to promote the city.
