Ear Farm Ranks NC's 10 Best

10 Aug 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Music, Playground, 2 Comments

New York-based music blog Ear Farm has just issued their ranking of the 10 bands from the Tar Heel state that “you should hear right now.” Though we’ll have to wait until Wednesday to find out who the folks at Ear Farm–who cite the Love Language, Bowerbirds, Annuals and the Rosebuds as favorites–chose as their top pick, spots 10 through 2 went to:

10. The Proclivities
9. Bellafea
8. Lost in the Trees
7. Black Skies
6. Schooner
5. Hammer No More the Fingers
4. The Bronzed Chorus
3. Birds of Avalon
2. Megafaun

I’m betting number one goes to someone like I Was Totally Destroying It, but wouldn’t it be awesome to see Des Ark there? You can read about each band here.
UPDATE: Links to all bands’ MySpaces accounts have been added, and, on second thought, the Physics of Meaning would be a totally acceptable and awesome band for numero uno. Or the Never–really, there’s just a lot of deserving bands, including some already on the list.

Two major updates in the local music scene we’re a bit late on:

1. The bands for Troika 2009, set for November 5-7, have been announced and the list is amazing, including Bowerbirds, Hammer No More the Fingers, Embarrassing Fruits, Bellafea, Pink Flag, the Future Kings of Nowhere and many many more. Check out the full list here.

2. Flying Tiger Sounds, WKNC and Terpsikhore Records are releasing a compilation of 18 Triangle bands benefiting The Visual Exchange. The album, entitled Hear Here: The Triangle, will have an official release Aug. 29 at the Cat’s Cradle with performances by Hammer No More the Fingers, Annuals, Birds of Avalon and the Never. Other contributing bands include the Rosebuds, the Beast, the Love Language, Americans in Paris, Kooley High and the Old Ceremony.

Club Is Open 2009 Schedule Announced

Chapel Hill’s second annual The Club Is Open Festival released its schedule earlier today. The festival celebrates local music, offering four days of great shows in what is often a quieter summer concert schedule with so many large acts hitting up the festival circuit. This year’s festival (July 7-11) includes almost 20 bands (among them Future Kings of Nowhere, Hammer No More the Fingers and Red Collar) and includes five Chapel Hill venues. Proceeds from all shows go to cytunes.org and the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke.

Check after the jump for the full schedule. (more…)

Yesterday's News: TRKFest and I Was Totally Destroying It

21 Apr 2009, Posted by Andrew Hibbard in Playground, 0 Comments

Two bits of news we are a day late in posting. Bad news first, then good.

  • After the announcement of a contract on the band’s MySpace less than a month ago, Neckbeard Record’s has terminated their contract with I Was Totally Destroying It “Citing irreconcilable differences” according to a press release from the label. IWTDI was scheduled to release The Beached Margin/Done Waiting double EP in May alongside former labelmate Lemming Malloy, who are still signed and will release their album in May. Lemming Malloy is having a record release party May 22 at Local 506. IWTDI was schedule to play but we’re betting they are off the bill now. No news as to what said “irreconcilable differences” are, but it’s an interesting storyline for sure. IWTDI’s Done Waiting EP can be download at Reverb Nation for free, here.
  • After a successful first go last May, Trekky Records has scheduled its second (now) annual TRKFest for Saturday, June 13, again at the Piedmont Biofuels plant in Pittsboro, NC. In addition to the regular slate of Trekky bands, the day-long festival will include favorites Hammer No More the Fingers, Ivan Rosebud (that’s the Rosebud’s Ivan Howard), Midtown Dickens and Megafaun. Read more about the even (including the other events like the Pants-off Dance-off) over at Trekky’s blog.
