Check out the Fall Arts Preview, on stands today. In regard to the Duke Performances story, Director Aaron Greenwald mentioned a two-part video that he said, in many ways, was a source of inspiration for the 2009-10 programming. You can check out the videos on Duke Performances’ Web site here or below. Lambchop and Alejandro Escovedo will play at Reynolds Industrial Theater Nov. 13. DukePerformances Announces 2009-10 Schedule

Duke Performances has just released its schedule for the 2009-2010 academic calendar. The season incorporates 10 thematic series (By the River, This House on Fire, With These Hands, Voices Lifted, At the Crossroads, Moved, Piano Recital Series, Duke Artists Series, Ciompi Quartet and Chamber Arts Society) from around the world and commences Sunday, August 30 at 4 p.m. in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, commemorating their 75th year. Tickets go on sale for all events July 21. For the full listings, check out the dP Web site here. Music in the Gardens 2009

After a successful run last year, Duke Performances is bringing back its summer Music in the Gardens series. Called “Music in the Gardens: Listening Locally,” the series  puts the spotlight on “the best forward-thinking art from the state.” This years schedule looks great.

May 27 – Ciompi Quartet with Vega String Quartet and Joe Robinson, oboe – Nelson Music Room, East Building, East Campus
June 3 – Thad Cockrell

June 17 – Megafaun 
June 24 – Alina Simone 
July 1 – Dex Romweber Duo 
July 8 – Mallarme Chamber Players with Brussels Chamber Orchestra – Kirby Horton Hall, Duke Gardens
July 15 – The Love Language
July 22 – Eric Bachmann
July 29 – Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey

All shows are outside in the Sarah P. Duke Gardens on the lawn behind the Doris Duke Visitor Center (the building by the parking )unless otherwise noted. Food and drink are permitted, and concerts go rain or shine (anyone who was at Portastatic last year should know this). General admission is $10, Duke employees are $5, students and children under 12 are free.

Durham Viking epidemic continues: High Master

Many things pass over the desk of the recess editor, or would if I had a desk. Most of them end of getting chucked, but some are too weird to pass up. Like this one.

Tight on the heels of Viking Storm, the two-day celebration at the Coffeehouse and the Pinhook to mark the release of Hammer No More the Fingers’ Looking for Bruce, High Master–which bills itself as “Durham’s only Viking power rock band”–is playing at the Pinhook Saturday night with Pink Flag and Rat Jackson.

The band includes our friends Paul Overton and Ken Rumble from Duke Performances, and Saturday night will prove whether they’re any good, or if they should stick to presenting real musicians.
