Last night 1210 Duke and UNC bands squared off at the Duke Coffeehouse to see who was least square. The show was put on by Duke’s Campus Concert Series.
I was actually a judge for the show, so I’m not going to say much here–I guess I already got my say. For the record, though, winners were UNC’s Huguenots, a great, poppy, riffy band (and easily the night’s nattiest dressers). By winning, they earned a cash prize and a chance to play at LDOC. If you’re itching for a sneak preview, check out their show this Friday at the Coffeehouse with Physics of Meaning, another great CH band.
Finalists–two from each school–were the Huguenots and Lafcadio (props for a compelling take on “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”) from UNC and the Soulless Dogs and Tauri Wind from Duke. They’ll all get the chance to play at future CCS shows.
San Francisco-based John Vanderslice and hometown boy/the only constant Mountain Goat John Darnielle will play the second show of their 13-city Gone Primitive tour tonight at the Duke Coffeehouse. Doors are at 9, the show is at 9:30. Unlike most Coffeehouse shows, there were pre-sale tickets but there are still tickets available at the door ($12 Duke students, $15 general). Check today’s recess for Kevin Lincoln’s preview of the show.
A few weeks into the semester, the Duke Coffeehouse has released its schedule and it is excellent. Phosphorescent, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and Durham’s own John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats will be making stops. Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu has also rescheduled his cancelled show from last semester. K Records is also sending Mahjongg Sound out and the hotly anticipated (at least for me) new Hammer No More the Fingers album will drop at the Coffeehouse.

Yesterday night I headed over to the Coffeehouse (for my first show of the semester there, no less) expecting a pleasant evening of Duke-bred music. What I got was a bean bag chair, and a great show from both parties.
