Hometapes artists Megafaun and Slaraffenland, along with Trekky Record’s the Physics of Meaning and a slew of other bands (Stars Like Fleas, Balmorhea and Murder) all made their way into a recent Vincent Moon-filmed Takeaway Show. Shot at SXSW 2009, the 25-minute video is a gorgeous flow of music to both listen to and watch. The video starts with Megafaun playing”Worried Mind” from their excellent new release Gather, Form & Fly, and, according to the Trekky Records blog, Physics of Meaning are playing a new song, likely featured on their next album (after the 15-minute mark).

We’ve already seen Duke Performance’s 2009-10 musical offerings but we’re already getting a sneek preview of some of the Duke University Union and Coffehouse offerings. First, somewhat old news, rising D.C. sensation Wale will grace Duke’s East Campus Quad Aug. 28 after the student activities fair targeted at first-years. Later that night, things get a little more folk and a little more local when Midtown Dickens stops by the Coffeehouse for their CD release party.
Additionally, Islands will grace the Coffeehouse with their presence Nov. 1 in promotion of their third album Vapours, which drops Sept. 22. Who’s secretly hoping Nick Thorburn shows up on Franklin St. the night before?
Check back here for a full Coffeehouse schedule soon.
Two major updates in the local music scene we’re a bit late on:
1. The bands for Troika 2009, set for November 5-7, have been announced and the list is amazing, including Bowerbirds, Hammer No More the Fingers, Embarrassing Fruits, Bellafea, Pink Flag, the Future Kings of Nowhere and many many more. Check out the full list here.
2. Flying Tiger Sounds, WKNC and Terpsikhore Records are releasing a compilation of 18 Triangle bands benefiting The Visual Exchange. The album, entitled Hear Here: The Triangle, will have an official release Aug. 29 at the Cat’s Cradle with performances by Hammer No More the Fingers, Annuals, Birds of Avalon and the Never. Other contributing bands include the Rosebuds, the Beast, the Love Language, Americans in Paris, Kooley High and the Old Ceremony.
With its final season looming, it was a big weekend for hit TV show Lost at Comic Con in San Diego, CA.
The day kicked off with a morning panel led by creators Damon Lindelof and Calrton Cuse that featured islanders Hurley (Jorge Garcia), Ben (Michael Emerson), Sawyer (Josh Holloway), Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) and, in typical always-keep-you-guessing Lost fashion, the deceased Charlie (Dominic Monaghan). The producers revealed two faux commercials, one for Mr. Clucks and another for Oceanic Airlines, which raised even more questions surrounding the possible time erasure / nuclear explosion of last season’s finale. To further add to the mystery, it is reported that a phrase along the lines of “Am I really dead?” was written on Monaghan’s hand, possibly usurping the line “not Penny’s boat” he wrote in the finale of season three (read more about the main panel here).
Unfortunately, many were left waiting in the San Diego heat after 6,500 filled Hall H to capacity. Luckily, Entertainment Weekly reporters Doc Jensen and Dan Snierson, who run the in-depth blog / video recap ‘Totally Lost’, held a smaller panel in front of about 200 people later in the afternoon. They recapped for those who missed the larger panel, pinpointing the five main pieces of knowledge the audience learned: 1) we don’t know anything (ha-ha) 2) time may have been rebooted which could mean that Flight 815 never crashed 3) the Dharma Initiative is becoming less important 4) Daniel Farady and Juliet are both returning 5) Richard Alpert’s story is going to be fully revealed.
