NY Times Picks Top 10 Books

The New York Times Book Review editors have just released their selection of the top 10 books from 2008. The list comes from the editors’ selection of 100 notable books from the year. Predictable picks include 2666 and Toni Morrison’s new novel. But superstars John Updike, Philip Roth, Tobias Wolff and the Times’ own David Carr and Thomas Friedman did not make the cut.

 In fiction, the picks are:

• Steven Millhauser’s short story collection Dangerous Laughter
• Toni Morrison’s A Mercy
• Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland
• Robert Bolano’s lengthy post-humous 2666
• Jhumpa Lahiri’s Unaccompanied Earth

And in non-fiction:

• Jane Mayer’s The Dark Side about the war on terror and American ideals
• Julian Barnes’ memoir Nothing to Be Frightened Of
• Times correspondent Dexter Filkins’ The Forever War
• Drew Gilpin Faust’s The Republic of Suffering about the Civil War
• Patrick French’s V.S. Naipaul biography The World Is What It Is
