Anyone with a pal at NC State looking to see Annuals better call that friend soon. The Raleigh band, alongside Lonnie Walker and Cougar Magnum, will be playing NC State’s Lee Field April 24, which is Earth Day and all the university’s last day of class. By the event promises to be a bit different from Duke’s debaucharous end-of-semester celebration. It is free to all students and guests are only allowed to bring one friend to the alcohol-free event. The show is 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Information is available here.
IMDb has some updates on it’s Main Streetpage. We now have the names of some characters: Colin Firth (who was spotted at the Nasher yesterday) is playing Gus Leroy, Ellen Burstyn is Georgiana Carr (a relationship to Duke’s Carr, perhaps?) and Orlando Bloom’s cop character is named Harris Parker. No news on Amber Tamblyn or Andrew McCarthy’s characters, but we do know Patricia Clarkson is playing Willa–no last name available yet.
The cast list also includes two new names: Nadya Simpson, whose only has this film listed in her credits, and Andrea Powell, who is not unfamiliar to North Carolina based on her work in Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill. Powell’s resume also includes work in the Super Mario Bros. film and Matlock. Awesome? Yes.
Behind the scenes, there are also a few impressive names listed on IMDb in some of the most significant capacities. Don McAlpine is listed as the cinematographer. He boasts an impressive resume, that includes work with Baz Luhrman on Romeo+Juliet and Moulin Rouge!, earning an Oscar nod for the latter (any chance we’ll get the same frenetic camera work on this project?). Gary Jones, Oscar-nominee for The Talented Mr. Ripley, is listed as the costume designer.
Having multiple wives would be a great solution for Mr. Lonely. Courtesy Universal.
Alright, even if Akon is a reported polygamist, his 2005 single proves that the man can still get lonely. Apparently, even successful pop stars feel the sting of social and emotional isolation. The video shows a depressed Akon turning down an invitation from friends to ruminate on a relationship that went awry, as he wanders the streets to mourn his lost love. The Senegalese singer admits that “Ever since my girl left me/My whole life came crashing down.” A heavily sampled chorus reinforces this anguish that Akon is feeling:
Lonely
I’m Mr. lonely
I have nobody
For my own
If ever the emoticon were necessary, it would be now. Sure, Akon has had his down moments (Exhibit A and Exhibit B), but you kind of have to feel for the guy a little bit throughout the video. What’s worse, while many people— Akon included— think loneliness is merely a gloomy or uncomfortable feeling, prolonged social isolation is in fact a serious detriment to one’s mental and physical health. If Akon continues to be so lonely, he may not even have the strength anymore to throw fans off the stage.
As promised (albeit a bit late), here are some extras and outtakes from Glen Gutterson’s recent photo shoot of the latest fashions from Durham’s eco-chic Vert & Vogue. Direction by Nancy Wang. Models: Ren Peir & Laura Goldsmith.
Let me tell you, it’s hard to write on perfection. And Friday Night Lights is perfection. So before I slap a big ol’ SPOILER ALERT on this here blog post, please permit me a few words to wax poetic about the greatest show on television. That’s right, I said greatest show on television. Sure, there are people out there who would prefer Gossip Girl or some less-than-FNL-y show like that. But in the prophetic words of Coach Eric Taylor, “To those people, I would say you’re wrong. You’re dead wrong.” Now, I’m not an expert on TV (some would argue I’m not even an expert on sports), but I do watch a lot more television than anyone else I know… and that has to count for something, right? Right. So without further ado, my thoughts/questions/concerns about last night’s Friday Night Lights finale.
*SPOILER ALERT* If you haven’t watched the final episode of the third season yet, stop reading here. I don’t want to be that loudmouth girl who ruins the personal emotional roller coaster that is an episode FNL. (more…)
